Recclesia has been appointed as Heritage Consultants to undertake survey and research work at the Gwydir Chapel and St Grwst’s Church in Llanrwst as part of their preparation for an HLF funding application.
Recclesia’s Heritage Consultant Lee Bilson will work alongside our specialist conservators to examine every part of the fabric of the historic chapel and its contents in order to establish their significance and condition, and identify options for remedial conservation work, repairs to the structure and changes to the internal environment to best preserve it and its contents.
The church was built in the late 15th century and the Gwydir Chapel was added in 1633–34 by Richard Wynn of Gwydir, an English courtier and politician. The chapel is dedicated to the Gwydir family and contains various monuments to members of that family. There is also a 13th-century stone coffin which is said to be that of Llwelyn the Great, prince of Gwynedd and ruler of Wales in the 1200s.
