Recclesia is currently working with the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust in Stratford-upon-Avon to repair and conserve the Shakespeare Monument which sits behind New Place. We have been commissioned to draw up conservation proposals, obtain listed building consent, then carry out the work. Consents were granted on the basis of our proposals in November 2019 and conservation work will begin in 2020.
The Shakespeare Monument has an interesting history, having originally been sited outside the Shakespeare Gallery on Pall Mall in London. It was relocated to its present location in 1871. There are a number of issues which need addressing, including some lost carved details which will be replaced, as well as consolidation work to friable stone, removal of organic growth and atmospheric deposits, and repointing work.
The garden remains open to visitors throughout the work, and is well worth a visit if you've not been!
